November report

EARL’S COURT SOCIETY - TRANSPORT SUB-GROUP

Mark Balaam (Chairman), Nick Woollven (Deputy Chairman), George Jasieniecki, Ann Kutek

REPORT – NOVEMBER 2022

1. ECS – TSG Activities

The Sub-Group is increasingly worried about the growth in infractions of the Highway Code by cyclists generally, notably riders of delivery bikes and e-cycles on and off pavements endangering public transport users and others in Earl’s Court, and that this encourages inappropriate use of Santander bikes by tourists from abroad.  CCTV monitoring and enforcement is urged to tackle items such as riding the wrong way up Earl’s Court Road and other one-way streets, the lack of lights on cycles and insufficient safety clothing.

·     The Sub-Group has submitted on behalf of the Society extensive comments to TfL on the recent consultation on bus routes in Central London.

·     Following its enquiry to the London Transport Museum as to their possible fate, the Sub-Group is delighted to report the restitution of the working heritage train destination indicators on the District Line platforms at Earl’s Court station (see below).

·     The Sub-Group has secured a number of the wall-mounted posters of past activities at the Earls Court and Olympia Exhibition Centres from The Bolton pub upon its recent closure. The Sub-Group plans to send these to Olympia London, with the intention that these would be held by Olympia London in the Earls Court Exhibition archive, for their retention and display for the purposes of research and posterity.

·     The strikes that affected London Underground services are going ahead as planned.

·     This year is the sixtieth anniversary of the introduction of the Earl’s Court One-Way System.

2. West London Line Group activities

The strikes called by the rail unions that have been affecting London Overground and Southern services are continuing as planned, save those for Thursday 15th and Saturday 17th September which were called off as a mark of respect following the death of HM Queen Elizabeth
